Before going deep, I would like
to thank few people with whom this adventurous journey has been possible, Niranjan Pradhan, the
man who inspired me to go there, Subash Ch. Barad, without him it was not way
possible & Subhasish Dash, my
reliable & fearless travel partner.
This plan was there in my mind since the for last 2 and a half years. I
first got the information of "Rajgiri waterfall" from a facebook post
of Niranjan Pradhan who works as a teacher in Gatiswar High school of nearby
Malisahi village. Last Independence Day, I started to explore this hidden
treasure located inside the core areas of Khandapada forest range in Nayagarh
district with Subhasish Dash, an amazing adventure enthusiast.
We started early about 6.30 in the morning & reached Malisahi by 10am, which is about 7kms away from Nayagarh city towards Khandapada. Niranjan was generous enough to introduce us to one of his students named Subas ch Barad, who guided us all throughout this exploration.
Rajgiri waterfall is situated deep inside the Khandapada forest
range. From Malisahi village, the distance of waterfall is 9 kms. Initial 6 kms
is a narrow root through jungle which is approachable by two-wheeler only.
Rest 3 kms one needs to trek on the hill & the trekking is enormously
tough. The source of the waterfall is at the extreme top of the hill &
there are many places on the hill where you can find water dropping down from a
higher distance to give it the shape of waterfall.
After covering initial 6 kms by bike, we started trekking to
the hill top with the assistance of Subash. There is no proper road to the top
& it is virtually impossible to make it to the waterfall without the help of locals. After 3 hours and
15 minutes of trekking with total 8 breaks in the way, we were able to see a
red flag flying in the sky. It was the flag of a small Hanuman temple built at
the hill top, which was also our destination point. We got ourselves energized realizing
that we are close to the destination.
After a brief rest at the Hanuman temple, we did some photography. The valley was looking incredibly beautiful & green from there. Subash reminded us; we are not far from the falls & let's get down. The source of the fall was just down the temple & we reached there within no time. And what a beauty it was!! The real hidden treasure of nature!! #Odishaaah !! Just under the 1st waterfall, there were two more falls from the same source of water, both of them bigger than the 1st one.
From our earlier experience, we knew getting down was going to be relatively easier. Surprisingly, Subash took us to a different route to show us the flow of water through the rocky surface of hill that constitutes a small river Baghamari. So we were returning on a different path, which was the bank of the stream created by the waterfall. And it was a life time experience - for one time I thought I was in Khandadhara falls (Sundargarh side), as the view looked like that. Gradually, we got down within couple of hours to the place where we parked our bike.
On a concluding note, I must say that it was a journey of a lifetime. The
locals are trying to make the path accessible. This destination is unknown
& unidentified to many; still the beautiful waterfall has got its own
identity.
