Kapilash in dhenkanal district of odisha is an important pilgrimage destination in odisha speciality for the shaivite. Locally kapilash is known kailash of odisha, the second adobe lord mahadev.
Here the principal deity is chandrasekhar mahadev, whose 13th century temple is present at the peak of the kapilash hill. There are also other temples, mathas, caves and religious places in the hill. The other three temples next to chandrasekhar mahadev temple are narayana, biswanath and parabati. Devasava or indrasabha and sita entudisala, a cave where sita gave birth to lava and kusha are other religious places
In earlier times reaching near temple was not easy and was a tough hilly route through dense forest. Later on of 1000+ steps and all weather 5 km long ghat road was constructed. People have deep faith in kapilash mahadev and have belief that he fullfills every wishes, that draws many devotees daily. Shivaratri is the major festival and every monday is considered ospicious.
The temple was built by narasinghdev 1 or the langula narasinghadev in 13th century. Though the temple architecture is simple and does not feature much stone works as seen in other temples of the period there are few interesting things as well e.g. lord jagannath is present as parswa devata in entry side wall and the jaga mahana was completely wooden built with fine art forms.
The place is named after great sage kapila who used to have a ashram here. Kapilash finds it mention in multiple ancient texts like kalidas's meghdut, kapila muni's kapila samhita. It's said santh sridhar swami, mahima swami had mediated here.
Though i had come to kapilash in multiple times in previously, recentyly i had the oppertunity the visit the shrine after the lockdown restrictions were lifted, when i could document the jiunery and experience through a video.
