Maa kichakeswari temple of Khiching, Mayurbhanj is the biggest temple of ancient capital of Mayurbhanj kingdom which was then known as khijingokota.

This temple is about only 30kms from my native place, hence i had been to this temple many times. But the recent visit and followed up online search revealed it's story and history to me.

It's built with black granite stone in Rekha style of kalinga temple architecture see in other temples of odisha such as Lingararaj and Bramheswar though it does not have the porch seen in temple with the architecture. This style is unique also known as Kiching style of missing porch temple architecture.

The bada deula or maa kichakeswari temple has a height of 100 feet and the original temple was built in 9th century which later on collapsed due to weak foundation. Watch the video in full to know full history.

After re discovery in 18th century by ASI, the temple premise was excavated and remaining of main temple, deity, other small temples and Buddhist complex was found.

A museum was build to preserve the archeological item and the new temple was built in the original design of old temple with the door jambs, shrines in 19th century by King Pratap chandra bhanja deo at an expense of Rs 80,000 at that time.
